Artificial intelligence has entered everyday tools
Generative artificial intelligence is no longer a laboratory topic: it is built into the office suites, management software and customer service tools you already use. Drafting, summarising documents, searching your own content, translating: the gains are tangible on specific tasks.
The precautions are just as real. What your staff place in these tools sometimes leaves the company, and the answers produced need to be reviewed. Defining what may be entrusted to them, and what may not, is now a management decision rather than a technical setting.
Automating without developing
Automation platforms make it possible to connect applications together and remove duplicate data entry, without writing code. An order that feeds the accounts, a form that creates a customer record, a report sent automatically: these small cumulative gains change a team's daily life. The point to watch is the dependency created, and who will be able to maintain those automations over time.
Connected devices are moving beyond industry
Temperature sensors, vehicle tracking, footfall counting, energy readings: equipment once reserved for large installations has become affordable. It produces useful data, provided you know in advance which decision that data is meant to inform.
Telling a passing trend from a lasting use
Not every technology announced as revolutionary finds its place in a company, and some take years to become genuinely usable. An innovation is only of interest to your SME if it answers an identified need, fits your existing tools and has someone able to keep it alive.
Innovating without replacing everything
The most profitable projects are rarely the most visible. Making better use of software you already pay for, removing a duplicate entry or making a piece of data reliable often brings more than a complete change of system. Part of an IT director's role is also to say what is not worth doing.
